Expert Tip

Jackfruit trees fruit on their trunk and large limbs—support developing fruit with slings or crates to prevent snapping. Fertilize during flowering to boost fruit size and sweetness.

Planting And Care

Pot: Use a 24"+ container with multiple drainage holes. Suitable for cooler cities to raise in early years. Use 50% loam, 30% compost, 20% sand.

Sunlight

Outdoor: Choose a full sun spot sheltered from high winds. Dig a 2.5x2.5 ft hole. Mix native soil with compost and coarse sand (50/30/20). Jackfruit requires deep, loamy, well-drained soil. Avoid clay or shallow soil.

Watering

Young trees: Water deeply 2-3 times per week in summer. Mature trees: Weekly deep watering suffices during dry months.
Always allow surface soil to dry slightly between waterings. Use mulch around the base.

Fertilizing

Use a balanced fruit tree fertilizer (NPK 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) every 6 weeks from March to September.
Supplement with compost or cow manure in early spring and after fruiting.

Pruning

Prune in winter to manage size and shape. Remove dead branches and encourage a strong central trunk.
Remove small fruit in early years to help tree build strength.

Weather Protection

In Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad, protect young trees in December-January with frost cloth. Move potted trees indoors or to greenhouses.
