Expert Tip

For quicker fruiting, choose a grafted variety and grow in full sun with regular feeding. Trees in Karachi, Thatta, or Hyderabad can produce fruits within 3 years under ideal care.

Planting And Care

Pot: Use a 16-20 inch deep pot with good drainage holes. Best for colder areas like Islamabad and Lahore, where the tree can be moved indoors in winter. Use a light potting mix with compost and coarse sand.

Sunlight

Outdoor: Choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil. Chikoo trees love heat and don't tolerate waterlogging. Add organic compost and mix with sandy loam to promote drainage.

Watering

Water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. During summer (May-August), water 2-3 times/week in hot areas. Reduce watering in winter, especially in cooler zones.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced fruit fertilizer every 6-8 weeks from March to September. Apply well-rotted compost at the base twice a year. For yellowing leaves, use micronutrients like iron and magnesium.

Pruning

Chikoo trees require minimal pruning. After harvesting, remove only dead or overlapping branches to improve air circulation.

Weather Protection

Sapodilla is sensitive to frost. In Rawalpindi, Quetta, or Murree, grow in containers and bring indoors below 7°C. Young trees in ground should be wrapped in burlap or frost cloth during cold spells.

The Sapodilla Tree, commonly known in Pakistan as Chikoo, is a beloved tropical fruit tree prized for its incredibly sweet, dessert-like fruit. The soft, brown flesh has a texture similar to ripe pear or fig, and a flavor that blends brown sugar, honey, and a hint of spice.

Chikoo trees are evergreen, hardy, and attractive, with glossy green leaves and rough, bark-like stems. They can grow into medium-sized shade trees and are also manageable in containers when young.

Where to Grow Chikoo in Pakistan

Sapodilla thrives in the hot, dry, and semi-humid regions of Pakistan, especially in Sindh (Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta), southern Punjab (Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur), and parts of Balochistan (Lasbela, Turbat).
