Everything you need to know before you plant

Botanical Name Citrus sinensis (Blood Orange: Moro / Sanguinelli)
Growth Rate Moderate
Harvest Time January to March
Mature Height 10-12 ft (in ground), 6-8 ft (in pot)
Mature Width 6-8 ft
Spacing 10-12 ft spacing if planted in ground

Expert Tip

Blood Oranges require some winter chill for best color development. Cooler nights in December and January help intensify the fruit's red pigments.

Planting And Care
Sunlight

Outdoor: Choose a sunny spot with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
Pot: Use a 14-20 inch wide pot with drainage holes. Place in full sun and protect from winter frost. Repot every 2-3 years.

Watering

Water deeply when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. During flowering, avoid overwatering to reduce fruit drop. Summer: 2-3 times per week. Winter: Once every 7-10 days or as needed.

Fertilizing

Use a citrus-specific fertilizer monthly from March to September. Include micronutrients like iron and magnesium if leaves pale. Stop feeding by October to harden growth before winter.

Pruning

Remove any suckers from below the graft. Prune lightly after harvest to shape the tree and improve airflow.

Weather Protection

If grown in pots, move indoors or to a sheltered spot when temperatures fall below 8C. Use frost cloths for in-ground trees in vulnerable areas.

About Blood Orange Plant (Moro/Sanguinelli)

The Most Striking Citrus You Can Grow

Blood Oranges stand out in every citrus collection. Whether you choose the Moro or Sanguinelli variety, you'll get fruit with a deep red to purple flesh that's rich, juicy, and subtly sweet with raspberry-like notes. The Moro variety tends to have darker pigmentation and a tangier bite, while Sanguinelli is sweeter and matures slightly later.

Ideal for Citrus Enthusiasts in Pakistan

Blood Oranges flourish in areas like Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and Sahiwal, where summers are long and winters are cool but not extreme.
