Plant Details
Everything you need to know before you plant
Avoid overwatering during flowering season — this is a common cause of flower and early fruit drop in Malta. Deep watering during fruit growth improves sweetness and juice content.
Outdoor: Select a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sun daily. Use well-drained loamy or sandy soil.
Pot: Use a 14-20 inch pot with drainage. Place in full sun and protect in winter if grown in cooler regions.
Deep watering is important during fruit set and fruit development. Avoid watering during flowering, as excess moisture can cause premature fruit drop. Summer: 2-3 times per week. Winter: once a week or as needed.
Use a balanced citrus fertilizer from March to September. Apply monthly, and adjust based on leaf health. Supplement with micronutrients like iron or magnesium if leaves show pale color or yellowing.
Light pruning after harvest helps shape the tree and improve air flow. Remove suckers from the base, and cut any crossing, dry, or inward-growing branches.
Below 10C, potted trees should be moved indoors or to a covered verandah. Outdoor trees in frost-prone areas can be covered with frost cloth.
