Plant Details

Everything you need to know before you plant

Botanical Name Citrus sinensis (Tarocco)
Growth Rate Medium
Harvest Time Late January to March
Mature Height 10-15 ft (in ground), 6-8 ft (in pot)
Mature Width 8-10 ft
Spacing 10-12 ft (if planted in ground)
Suitable Zones Zones 9-11 (Pakistan citrus zones)
Sunlight Full sun – 6 to 8 hours/day
Expert Tip

The red flesh pigment in Tarocco oranges increases in response to cold night temperatures. If you're growing in a warmer climate, plant in a spot that gets cooler nights in winter, such as near boundary walls.

Planting And Care
Sunlight

Ground: Choose a full sun spot with good air circulation. Plant with the top of the root ball slightly above soil level. Water well and apply mulch 6 inches from trunk.
Container: Use a 16-20 inch clay or plastic pot with drainage holes. Keep in full sun and protect from frost.

Watering

Water regularly during the flowering and fruit set stage, but reduce watering during fruit maturity to prevent watery fruit and drop. Let top 2-3 inches dry between waterings.

Fertilizing

Begin feeding in early spring with a balanced citrus fertilizer. Apply monthly until September. Avoid excess nitrogen close to harvest as it may reduce fruit color and sugar levels.

Pruning

Remove inward-facing branches and suckers below the graft. Lightly prune post-harvest to maintain shape and airflow.

Weather Protection

Tarocco benefits from cooler winters to bring out the red pigment. Protect young plants from frost with cloth or by shifting pots indoors.

About Tarocco Orange Tree

The Queen of Eating Oranges – Now in Pakistan

The Tarocco Orange is Italy's prized citrus variety, now gaining popularity in Pakistan for its unique flavor and low-acid sweetness. Unlike Moro or Sanguinelli blood oranges, Tarocco often has only a light pink blush on the inside, but packs a rich, raspberry-like undertone and a perfect sugar-acid balance. Known as the "bloodless blood orange," it combines the antioxidant benefits of blood oranges without the deep red pigmentation.

Grows Well in Mild Winters & Warm Summers

Tarocco Oranges need a moderate winter chill to trigger flavor development, making them a perfect fit for areas like Sahiwal, Sargodha, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad.
